Cavalry "Reiter Regiment 17" Oberleutnant’s, Old Style Service Uniform (Dienstrock Alter Art).

The old style service tunic was introduced for wear in the Reichswehr during the short lived Weimar era, and was replaced with the field blouse in the Third Reich, with an unspecified wearing out period.

The 17th (Bavarian) Cavalry Regiment (colloquially 17er Reiter) in Bamberg was formed in 1919 as a cavalry unit of the Reichswehr. Until 1927 it was subordinate to the 7th (Bavarian) Division, which in turn had certain autonomy rights vis-à-vis the Reich government until 1924. The special role was shown not only by the national team recruitment but also externally by cockades and coats of arms in the national colors on the cap and steel helmet as well as in the same pennants on the lances. In 1934 the regiment was renamed the 17th Cavalry Regiment of the Wehrmacht. This was not dissolved when the cavalry divisions were dissolved in 1936, but only used as planned when the Wehrmacht mobilized on August 25, 1939 to set up reconnaissance departments..

During the war, the regiment was re-organized into the armored reconnaissance regiment number 17 and has been added to 13 Wehrmacht army corps. The regiment took part in combats in Poland, France and in the Netherlands. The battle way of the regiment at the beginning of the war in Russia was: Gomel – Kiev – Bryansk, the Western part of the Moscow region. In 1942 Smolensk Region: Yukhnov, Spas-Demensk, further Belgorod, Don, Voronezh. 1943 Kursk, Kiev, Zhytomyr. 1944: Vinnitsa, Kovel, Brody. At the end of the war the regiment fought in Thuringia and ended the war in Saxony.

Very nice quality, field-grey wool construction tunic.

The tunic features an eight button front closure with dual metal hooks and eyes at the neck.

The tunic features two pleated patch breast pockets and two diagonally angled slash hip pockets, all with scalloped button down flaps.

The straight cut, non-adjustable, sleeves have deep, fold back French cuffs which are stitched in the upright position at both the inner and outer sleeve seams.

The reverse of the tunic has a central, vertical, tail skirt vent with two belt ramp buttons situated at its top edge.

The interior of the tunic is fully lined in a grey/green rayon blend fabric with white/yelow sleeves.

The buttons are all the green washed, pebbled, magnetic sheet metal type and all to have their original stitching. The tunic is roughly size 49 cm chest.

The right breast has a hand embroidered breast eagle in bright silver/aluminum wire and bullion threads with green accent threads, on a cut-out, dark blue/green badge cloth base.

The tunic has sewn on shoulder boards of matte silver/aluminum Russian braid with a single stamped alloy rank pip and 1935 Wehrmacht pattern stylized, Gothic "17" to each on a yelow wool waffenfarbe base.

The collar features hand embroidered collar tabs in matte silver/aluminum wire threads with twisted yelow rayon branch of service stripes.

The collar tabs are neatly machine stitched to the collar.
