Thirty-second President (1933-1945). Appointed assistant secretary of the Navy by Wilson, he later contracted polio. While Governor of New York, he announced his candidacy for president, which he won easily. His fireside chats assured a worried nation, and his ;alphabet soup; programs tried to restore the economy. During his unprecedented four terms, he declared war on Japan and Germany after Pearl Harbor, but died a month before victory
