Holocaust & German Persecutions
Lot 888:
Very rare identification tag used for dogs that were used by the SS for war purposes. In this case this tag, that was ground dug in Poland, has the SS runes stamped as well as the text "Heeresdiensthund" (Service dog of the army). On the reverse there’s a number stamped, 282. These were also used by the Wehrmacht but without the runes, so most probably they were adapted for the SS units using Heer ones. SS used dogs not only for war purposes in the front but also in concentration camps and forced labour camps as surveillance and threatening methods as well as in round-ups in ghettos. We can’t make sure what was the main purpose of the dog that wore this tag, though.***This article is sent from our office in Europe***
