Lot 369:
Signed Postcard by Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel
Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (born November 15, 1891 in Heidenheim an der Brenz, died October 14, 1944 in Herrlingen) – German field marshal general.
Erwin Rommel was the youngest German field marshal (Generalfeldmarschall) during World War II. He commanded the Afrika Korps – the German Expeditionary Force in Africa. Thanks to his brilliant moves and tactics of rapid troop movement, he became a living legend among German soldiers, but above all among the Allies. Due to his cunning, he is called the Desert Fox (German Wüstenfuchs). At the end of the war (1944) he was assigned to France as the commander of Army Group B, with the task of improving the fortifications in Normandy in the face of the expected Allied invasion. He had a son.
After the unsuccessful coup, Heinrich Himmler and Martin Bormann informed Hitler that Rommel was in solidarity with the conspirators. They presented him with the SD reports and information from the Würzburg Kreisleiter. The field marshal’s hesitant attitude in Hitler’s eyes was confirmed by his appeal to the Fuhrer to end the war by signing a pact with the Allies. In the circle of those closest to him, he also said that the war was lost. Due to the enormous popularity of Rommel, Hitler decided to murder him quietly and without a trial. The order was carried out by the infantry general Wilhelm Burgdorf. Together with Ernst Maisel, he came to Rommel and put him before a choice: public trial and disgrace and possible lynching of the family or taking cyanide and avoiding further unpleasantness.
Before his death, Rommel had told his wife and son "I will die in fifteen minutes" and left with Burgdorf and Maisel. He died in the car. The public was informed that Erwin Rommel died as a result of his injuries. He was organized a state funeral with all the honors, but the highest officials of the NSDAP did not attend.
