Adolf Hitler – Metallguss, March 13, 1938

EIN EWIGE TRAUM DER DEUTSCHEN MENSCHEN WURDE VERWIRKLICHT 13.März 1938 (An Eternal Dream of the German People Was Realized March 13, 1938)

Anschluss (German Anschluss "annexation"), also – the annexation of the territory of the Austrian Federal State by the German Reich, carried out on March 12, 1938 in violation of the Treaty of Versailles (1919).

In early 1938, the government and the president of Austria resisted the seizure of power by the local Nazis. Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg on March 9, 1938 announced the holding of a referendum on March 13, in which the Austrians would have an opinion on the future of their country. In this situation, on the orders of Hitler, on March 12, 1938, the Wehrmacht entered Austria ("Otto" plan). That day, Adolf Hitler came to Vienna. Arthur Seyss-Inquart assumed the office of chancellor, to whom President Wilhelm Miklas also handed over his duties the next day. On March 13, the unfettered Austrian Nazis promulgated a law that Hitler subsequently approved, which incorporated Austria into the Great Reich as the Eastmarch (Ostmark).
