A receipt of payment, No. 1809, signed "Guilford" by Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford. 1p partially printed, measuring 7" × 9", London, dated July 20, 1759. With flattened folds, along with toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed by all parties.
The document is accompanied by an engraved portrait of the Earl of Guilford, published in 1833. From a recently discovered collection that has not seen the light of day for over 70 years!
In part: "Received by us Francis Earl of Guilford & Elisabeth Legge Lagatees of Lady Dartmouth of the Right Honourable George Earl of Macclesfield… the Sum of Forty Pounds…upon…An Act for Granting an Aid to Her Majesty for carrying on the War…by selling Annuities at several Rates.. and Duties of Excise upon Been, Ale, and other Liquors..
" Countersigned "Eliz Legge" and "Tho: Browne" as witnesses.
Francis North, Ist Earl of Guilford (1704-1790) was a British Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 until 1729. He also became the Treasurer of Queen Charlotte of the Royal House of Mecklenburg. His son, Frederick North, was Prime Minister of Great Britain during the American Revolution.
