Thirty-third President (1945-1953). Truman was a Senator from Missouri and chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program during World War I. In 1944 Roosevelt selected Truman as his running mate and served only two months before Roosevelt died. He ordered the atomic bombings and helped create the United Nations. He also approved of the Marshall Plan for war-torn Europe, created the Truman Doctrine which assisted countries threatened by Communism, and backed the Korean War. At home, his Fair Deal extended some of the domestic reforms Roosevelt had started
Incredible Harry Truman letter on Ike, "I do not like to discuss the President’s health… I do feel like talking about his running of the presidency before his heart attack." DESCRIPTION:
Typed letter signed, "Harry Truman", one page, 8.5" × 10.5". Kansas City, MO. August 3, 1956. To Dr. Herbert Koteen. No edge wear, the usual folds. Very fine condition.
Truman responds to Dr. Howard Koteen’s letter regarding Eisenhower’s run for Presidency after his heart attack.
Koteen expresses a concern on the physical toll the presidency could have on Eisenhower. Truman responds in full,
"Dear Dr. Koteen: Your letter, with enclosures, of July 28th was very much appreciated. I do not like to discuss the President’s health because that is a matter on which he and his physicians will have to make a decision. I do feel like talking about his running of the presidency before his heart attack. That, I think, is a legitimate subject to discuss. Sincerely yours, Harry Truman." Letter comes with Koteen’s letter and original transmittal envelope.
