Lot 129:
SS M34 helmet from Koenisberg (Kaliningrad) was found on the Baltic Sea coast near Balga. These particular helmets were used by concentration camp guards or SS auxiliaries. The castle cellars where this helmet was recovered were probably used as a military hospital during the war, until 1945. In March 1945, Balga was the last foothold of German troops on the eastern shore of the lagoon. Soviet units took the ruins of the castle under artillery fire. The castle tower, restored before World War II, was completely destroyed. Only parts of its outer wall now remain. Civilians and soldiers desperately tried to escape west across the Vistula Lagoon during the fighting. From Balga, sunken tanks, cars and carriages could be seen for a long time in the lagoon at low tide after 1945.
