Schwesternschaft der Krankenfürsorge des Dritten Ordens (Sisterhood of the Third Order of Nursing)
Story
The life of the first sisters was a real “gypsy life”. They had to earn their own living and did not yet have a home together. Only over the years did a real community of sisters develop. The work of caring for the sick unfolded and assumed amazing proportions.Areas of activity (outpatient wards, welfare centers, branches, houses, military hospitals during the two world wars).
Development of the sisterhood
In the annual report of 1913 we find 46 foreign stations manned by one or more sisters. 83 individual villages are named to which sisters were sent for short or long periods of temporary care. In addition, 39 rural nurses – they wore only the nurse’s brooch as a badge and kept the nursing log, which they had to send in every year – worked in their home towns. The activities of the sisters took place regardless of religious denomination.
During the First World War, numerous nurses were employed in various military hospitals to care for the wounded; 250 sisters worked in around 20 hospitals. The hospital in Nymphenburg was an auxiliary hospital.
During the Second World War, the hospital was "Reservelazarett Munich II, part hospital Third Order." The heavy bombing raids on Munich forced the construction of an alternative hospital with 150 beds in Schönbrunn.
In 1943 the hospital suffered several bomb hits. Eight people died, along with employees and two sisters, but no patients.
